Sandro Botticelli: Drawings for Dante's Divine Comedy
Category: sandro botticelli

In the 1480s, Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici commissioned the great Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli to create a series of drawings that would illustrate Dante's Divine Comedy. Botticelli beautifully depicted the poet's epic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. However, the project was left incomplete and the individual sheets were scattered. Now, over 500 years later, all 91 existing vellum sheets, which are extremely fragile, will be displayed together for the first time in Berlin, Rome, and London.
This accompanying book showcases each of Botticelli's canto sheets in stunning color. Each sheet is accompanied by a commentary from Hein-Thomas Schulze Altcappenberg of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, where 84 of the sheets are permanently housed. Additionally, eight essays on Botticelli, the Medici family, and the Divine Comedy are included in this unprecedented volume. This exhibition marks a historic occasion, bringing together Botticelli's works in a way that has never been done before.
